As much as we all love our pets there can be no end to the amount of hair that’s left lying around. That’s where the best vacuum for pet hair comes in!
Because I swear you could keep an airtight container, inside a locked drawer, in an animal free room of the house and it’ll still end up with dog hair in it.
While this blog is all about dogs the exact same goes for cats. Heck, you could have a polar bear roaming around your house and it would still put hair everywhere when it came to their annual shedding.
It’s a small price to pay to have such a loving companion with you, and it’s easily taken care of with the right tools, which brings us to this article. Let’s dive in and find out all you need to know about choosing the best vacuum for pet hair then take a look at the top picks.
What Does The Best Vacuum for Pet Hair Need
Ahem… First and foremost a vacuum for pet hair needs to be powerful. Pet hair is a tricky thing and it often clings to carpet fibers and hides in the cracks of hardwood floors so you need some extra power to really make sure it’s all sucked up.
A vacuum for pet hair will naturally be more powerful but if you’re getting one not specially designed for the tast then make sure it’s got extra suction.
The Right Attatchments
Like I said, pet hair gets everywhere so it’s important to have the right attachments so you can really get into all the corners and crevices of your house. If you want to get up on the sofa or on the stairs then it’s important to have exactly what you need.
A HEPA Filter
While this isn’t absolutely essential if you ever have guests who have pet allergies they’ll thank you for this. HEPA stands for high-efficiency particulate air and that means that there’s a filter which all the air passes through that removes almost all the extra particles in the air. So it’ll get rid of any dog smell and remove allergens from the air as well.
It’s not an essential feature of a vacuum for pet hair since it doesn’t affect how pet hair gets picked up but it does take away a lot of pet smell and removes and allergens in the air so it’s a definite bonus.
Types of Vacuum For Pet Hair
Basically you have three main types of vacuum for pet hair: Upright, Stick and Handheld.
The Upright Vacuum For Pet Hair
Upright vacuums are great because they have maximum power and the largest canister capacity for collecting dirt. They can be a bit less practical if you have stairs in your house but generally, the have a detachable nozzle you can use easily enough.
- Biggest Collection Capacity
- Most Cleaning Power
- Good for all floor types bare and carpet.
- Harder to Tackle Stairs
The Stick Vacuum For Pet Hair
Stick vacuums are great for pet hair. Lighter and more versatile than uprights they can be used to get everywhere you need them and (the good ones) double as handheld vacuums so you can get on your furniture and the drapes as well.
- Lightweight for easy use
- Handheld attachments
- Floor to Ceiling Cleaning
- Small Bin needs frequent emptying
The Handheld Vacuum For Pet Hair
Handheld vacuums are great for cleaning hard to get areas and if you just need a quick go around the couch. They can get in and about hard to reach areas with ease but they certainly won’t do your whole house. In fact, Consumer Reports recommend having more than one vacuum in your house for effective cleaning so a handheld could be a great backup.
- Easily get hard to reach areas
- Great for Furniture
- Light and easy to use
- Small Bin needs frequent emptying
- Can’t do whole house

V8 Absolute Vacuum Review
Most Suitable Floor Type::Hard Floor and Carpet
- Up to 40 minute run time
- Easily converts to handheld
- Comes with docking station for easy storage and charging
- HEPA filter
We have a winner! The Dyson V8 Absolute is the best vacuum for pet hair, easy to use and maneuver, you can clean anywhere, 35-minute battery life, powerful motor and suitable for carpets and hard floors. Wonderful, Only downside? A little pricey.
It claims to have a 40 minute run time but the reality is about 35 minutes on moderate power and 10 on maximum power. You definitely don’t need maximum power though unless you’re at an especially troubled area. Still a great runtime for a cordless vac and more than enough time to zip around the house with.
This model also charges in the dock which you mount on the wall for easy storage, about 5 hours and it’s fully charged.
The HEPA filter cleans the air passing through it removing allergens and expelling lovely fresh air.
You can actually get just the handheld version of this without the stick attachment but for the price difference, it is definitely worth getting this one. No one wants to spend all their time crawling around the floor doing the vacuuming!
It’s still great to get such suction power in a handheld to clean upholstery, the drapes or anywhere it might get.
Verdict – Super easy to just take out the cupboard and start vacuuming the V8 Animal is a must vacuum for pet hair.
Shark Rocket Corded Vacuum
Most Suitable Floor Type::Carpet and Hardfloor
- easily converts to handheld
- Great Price
- Attachment for hardfloors
While the Shark is less powerful than the Dyson above it also comes in at less than half the price. It’s still got enough power to cope with short pet hair but if you have a long-haired cat or dog then you might want to consider something else.
Nice and lightweight you can easily whiz round your house with it, it’s corded making it great for big houses and the nice long cord will reach around your house with ease.
It’s got the capability for hard floors as well as carpet but you have to put on a different attachment for the hard floor. It’s easy enough to change so it’s not a huge ask. The top pops off as well giving you a nice easy to use handheld vac.
The handheld vac has a cool motorized brush for deep cleaning which is a nice extra. Another cool feature is the LED lights on the head so you can really see what you’re vacuuming up. Handy for hidden places like under the sofa or bed.
Verdict – A solid vacuum for pet hair given the price but lacks the suction needed for long-haired pet.
Best Upright Vacuum For Pet Hair
Upright Vacuum cleaners are fantastic for pet hair. Maximum suction for the deepest clean. Just not quite as maneuverable as a stick vacuum!
Autoadjusting All Floor Animal Vacuum
Most Suitable Floor Type::Hardfloor and Carpet
- Self-adjusting cleaner head for all floor types
- Moves on a ball for easy maneuvering
- HEPA filter
- Very Strong Suction
- Available refurbished which is cheaper
- Big Cannister Capacity
This was a very strong contender for the top spot, the only reason it didn’t is it’s a little clumpy to get in around hard to reach places and the stairs.
But really that’s a small price to pay for one of the strongest vacuum suctions on the market. It will deal with any type of pet hair with ease and you have handy attachments for the nozzle to get hard to reach places.
The HEPA filter makes it great for allergy sufferers by cleaning up the air and removing allergens while you vacuum.
But one of my favorite parts is that you can save some money by getting yourself a refurbished one! That brings it to a very respectable price and you still get a 6-month warranty. Refurbished means it’s been returned because of a defect, often a broken part, that then gets fixed or replaced and it goes back on for sale. They go through rigorous quality checks to ensure they’re in full working order so it’s a great deal.
The vacuum itself is made around a great ball design so it really glides about your house. But the really cool part is that the head is self-adjusting! That means it knows when it’s changed from carpet to hard floor and adjusts itself accordingly. So if you have a mixture of flooring in your house you can breeze through without having to adjust a thing.
The powerful suction and self-adjusting head make it a great choice as one of the best vacuums for pet hair.
Brand: Shark Ninja
Most Suitable Floor Type:: Hardfloor and Carpet
- Lightweight at 15 lbs
- Pet Hair Pick Up System
- Long detachable hose
The Shark Navigator is a quick and easy way to vacuum your house. It’s lightweight, easy steering and has great suction on it so it’ll handle most pet hair with ease all for a great price!
The dirt collection canister isn’t the biggest and you’ll have to empty it after every use but it’s an easy removal and bagless empty system.
Annoyingly there isn’t anywhere on the vacuum to store the nozzle attachments, so when you pull the hose out you have to go back to the closet to pick up the piece you need. More of a mild inconvenience than an actual problem but something to be aware of.
I’m also not sure how long it will last compared to other models like the Dyson where you can get a good 10 years of great vacuuming. For the price, it’s good because you’ll get a few years out of it but that makes it more of a useful secondary vacuum for spot cleaning than tackling the whole house.
Best Handheld Vacuums For Pet Hair
Pet Hair Eraser
Most Suitable Floor Type::
- Great Price
- Good For Spot Cleaning
- Comes With Motorized Cleaning Head
- Comes With Upholstery Head
Cheap and cheerful the Bissel Pet Hair Eraser is great for spot cleaning. While it doesn’t have an enormous battery life (around 20 minutes) it is long enough to whip around the kitty litter or food bowls or have a once over of the couch.
You could also remove pet hair from your car with relative ease. The motorized head allows for stronger suction and a deeper clean while the upholstery fitting is great for more delicate materials.
It comes with a wall socket charger so you just plug it in and it’ll take about 5 hours to charge. You don’t want to leave it charging or you’ll find the battery life gets shortened. That’s just what happens with over charging battery’s (Semi-unrelated pro tip: if your phone battery seems short overcharging might be the reason).
Can’t complain though, the shark handheld vacuum for pet hair will clean up furniture with ease.
