Possible Diet Related Health Problems
Like all dogs, Boxers have some health problems they can develop as they get older. A proper diet can help prevent some of them and help treat others so let’s take a look!
Now it seems like a little bloating shouldn’t be any concern but in Boxers, it can actually be fatal. Bloating causes the stomach to twist and that cuts off the blood flow. Fortunately, there are some easy ways to completely prevent it happening.
Hip Dysplasia and Arthritis
Hip dysplasia is a hereditary problem so the only thing you can do to stop it is check with your breeder for documented proof that your pups parents don’t have it before your buy your dog. If you’re well beyond that and your dog already has it then all you can do is treat it to ease their pain and one of the ways to ease it is with proper diet.
The same goes for arthritis. If your dog already has it all you can do is make sure your dog is getting the right food to try and help ease the pain.
The first is making sure your boxer isn’t overweight. If they have to walk around carrying extra weight it’s going to put extra pain on their joints.
You also might consider fish based foods for the extra omega 3 fish oils which are extremely good for joints and possibly even look into a glucosamine supplement.
Boxers have a higher chance or experience allergies, the problem is there can be so many different causes!
They can be allergies to protein ingredients, whether it’s chicken, duck, salmon, or anything else really.
Allergies normally show themselves in itchy or dry skin on the skin of your dog. I’m sure you’ll notice they’re uncomfortable so you can start swapping foods, shampoos or anything else your boxer comes into contact with to try and stop it.
Dog allergies can be hereditary So check with your breeder if the parents have any allergies so you can know what to expect.
The best dog food for boxers with allergies are the ones that have limited ingredients so there’s less chance of things going wrong. Otherwise it’s a case of figuring out what the likely cause is and avoiding it.
Must Haves In Dog Food For Boxers
Just a couple of things that are really good to have in boxers food are that it’s grain free and loads of protein.
The Power Of Grain Free Dog Food For Boxers
Grains in dog food such as wheat, soy, corn, and even rice all ferment in the stomach, this fermentation then gives off gas which causes the bloating. Now as long as your dog can pass the gas it’s not as big a problem but when grain free dog food completely removes the problem there’s no good reason not to use it.
Removing grains also leaves room for more meat and vegetables in the dog food. So it’s not the carbohydrates that are the problem it’s the empty carbs lacking in vitamins and other nutrients.
Like I said before, boxers are full of energy but they’re also muscly dogs so they need a lot of protein to keep them strong. But it’s not as simple as looking for protein in the nutrition you have to get the right kind.
Types of Protein
There are three different types of protein normally found in dog foods, meat, meat meal and meat by-products.
Meat by products are what’s left of a carcass after you’ve stripped away all the main parts of meat. So it’s a sort of weird mix of bone cartilage and who knows what else… Absolutely not what you will find in the best dog food for boxers.
Meat meal is proper parts of meat just ground up and dehydrated. It’s a great way to add extra protein to dog food because it’s so concentrated. It’s a good source of protein but it’s processed so in my mind not as good as the real thing. And to preserve meat meal it often has chemicals added to it.
Meatstraight up the best source of protein, it’s the same meat that you yourself would eat (not that you should eat dog food that’s definitely not what I’m saying!)
Feeding Tips For Boxers
Avoid overfeedingas much as possible, boxers don’t have great self-control so you can’t just leave food in the bowl for them to eat. So feeding them correct portion sizes twice per day is perfectly fine for keeping them fit and healthy.
As for what is a correct portion size that varies from dog to dog based on how active they are and how big or small they are but a good place to start is about 1600 calories per day. I’ve included calories per cup of each recommendation and 1600 calories normally works out about 4 cups. So start with that and if your dog is still hungry (not just being greedy) then up the amount you give them. Likewise, if they start gaining weight reduce it.
All dogs are different and no one ones your dog better than you do so use your best judgment. Likewise, not all dogs take to every food the same way so you might need to try a couple out before you find something that works.

Limited Ingredient Diet Dog Food
- 418 Calories Per Cup
- Raw Diet Dog Food
- Grain and Gluten Free
Many people prefer a limited ingredient or “raw” diet for their dog, talking of its great health benefits. And for good reason, loads of people have talked of their dogs becoming much healthier after swapping out their store bought food for a species specific diet. So real meats and vegetables.
The problem is going all natural can be expensive and you find yourself spending longer cooking your dog’s dinner than your own which is why Instincts lamb dog food is so great for boxers.
It follows the philosophy of the all natural diet while providing it in kibble form. So it uses the most natural ingredients possible which packs it full of naturally occurring proteins, vitamins, and fats. All the ingredients are also sourced in the United States and the number of ingredients is kept to a minimum.
It’s available in duck lamb and turkey but the dog owners I’ve talked to have nearly all said their boxers prefer the lamb. So give the doggies what they want!

It’s also a source of live naturally occurring microorganisms that help digestion and make it great for sensitive stomachs. All round great for Senior Dogs
It’s not as many calories per cup as the other recommendations here but only by about 10% so you shouldn’t really notice a difference with how long it lasts.
