Your pooch can spend over 12 hours a day sleeping. Combine that with the rest of the day spent lounging in bed and it’s a long time! That’s why it’s so important that you get the best dog bed available.
I’ve put together this guide to help you find just that, I’ll let you know some of the different things you should look for when you’re choosing the best dog bed and then I’ve reviewed and recommended my favorites.
I’ve also split them up into different categories so you can find exactly the one you need. If you have any questions just let me know in the comments at the bottom!
What’s it Filled With
The filling makes up the very heart and soul of the dog bed so it’s good to get the right one. Really, there are just two different types of filling, Memory Foam and Fibre fillings.
Memory Foam Dog Beds
Memory foam is great for older dogs because it offers a lot more joint support making laying down a lot easier and more comfortable. It’s the main filling of orthopedic dog beds (Which I’ve written a separate guide about here).
Memory foams really comfortable and great for all dogs, just be aware it is very firm so if you think your dog won’t like that go for something else. Though I’m sure you could have worked that out… Anyway.
Most other dog beds tend to have some sort of microfiber filling which is a lot softer and much more snuggly. It doesn’t offer the same support but it’s super comfortable and generally weighs a lot less so you can move them around the house easier.
The softness means they’re much more malleable making them a great choice for a crate bed.
Getting The Right Cover
There are just two things you might need from a dog bed cover: Waterproofing and tear-resistance. The waterproof isn’t essential but if you have an older dog it might be a safe bet.
Strong and rip resistant, however, is a must. Even if your dog isn’t a chewer, a thin cover could easily get pierced by a rouge nail. And from there it’s just a matter of time before the whole things open and filling is all over the house. Not good.
Of course if you have a small dog with well-trimmed nails who doesn’t chew it’s no big deal. But if that’s the case you should question if your dog did, in fact, come from heaven.
The best is anything that’s made to last, so my favorite is suede because it’s naturally quite durable but you also get polyester covers that have been designed to be tough and waterproof.
You always have the choice as well to throw a blanket on top of the bed to help make the cover last. That extra material barrier will stop the bed fabric wearing away or being accidentally torn. Not essential but something to think about. If you have one blanket that’s your dog always sleeps with it makes transitioning them to a new bed easier because they have that familiarity and comfort.
How Big Your Dog is Dictates The Bed
Bit of an obvious one, but if you have a bigger dog you’ll need a bigger bed! So especially when shopping online you want to check the dimensions to make sure your dog is going to fit on his bed.
You don’t want to end up like the golden retriever who’s still grateful for the tiny bed his mom bought him.

Best Dog Beds For Large Dogs
By large dogs I’m talking about German Shepherds, Labradors, Great Danes, Mastiffs, Rottweilers, Dobermans, you get the idea. I’ve got a separate article just for dog beds for labs for those who are interested.
100% Suede Dog bed
- Tear Resistant Cover
- Anti Skid Bottom
- Washable Cover
A superb large dog bed coming in at a size of: 44″ x 34″ x 10″. Very comfortable and with a slightly raised edge for snuggling.
The cover is very durable being tested and proven as chew proof which is saying a lot. So although it’s a little more expensive you are getting a top quality dog bed that’ll last you really well.
The memory foam is lovely and firm and can hold a weight of up to 100 lbs so even big dogs can sleep comfortably without sinking through to the floor. And you can machine wash the cover which just makes life infinitely easier.
All in all, it’s a fantastic dog bed and any large dog would be lucky to lie on it! Strong washable cover and top quality memory foam mean it can stand the test of time.
Snuggly Orthopedic Dog Bed
- Comfy Headrest Rim Pillow
- Washable Cover
- Great Price
This is a great affordable dog bed with only one flaw. The polyester cover is not very thick and can be prone to tearing, so having a blanket to throw on top is an absolute must. And it is a definite no go for chewers.
But for well-behaved dogs it’ll be a comfortable couch for them to spend their days on and sleep through the night on. The foam inside is orthopedic giving it excellent support and the cushion around the edge makes it great for snuggly sleepers.
So although it definitely isn’t the best it is still a great inexpensive dog bed.
Premium Memory Foam Dog Bed
Cover Material:Polyester & Cotton
- Water Resistant
- Fully Washable
- Soft Cover
First off, note this is water resistant not waterproof. So if there is liquid on it it will very slowly soak in if left unattended for a long period of time.
But it being water resistant not water proof makes it much more comfortable and means there’s not rustling sound every time your dog moves around in their sleep. The size is 36” x 28” x 9” so not for the biggest of dogs but still a good size.
The edge cushion also has a removable cover that is washable which is great. For a lot of the cheaper beds that cushion isn’t removable and so you can only wash half the bed.
The cover is strong but it’s not polyester will always be weaker than suede so a cover might not be a bad idea just in case. But you can buy replacement covers so that’s always an option.
Best Medium Dog Beds
Medium dogs being: Boxers, Golden Retrievers, Dalmatians, Pit Bull Terrier, Border Collie, English Bull Dogs, and so on.
Cover Material:Polyester Cotton
- Great For Snuggling
- Waterproof Cover
- Washable Cover
Majestic are a very strong brand known for their great craftsmanship and top quality products. Well, this bagel bed is no different! It’s a great one for snuggly dog sleepers who can burrow into the sides for a snooze and the waterproofing makes it great for puppies too.
The polyester fill make this a really soft bed to lie on and the bed itself is an awesome price. The cover is made to last, being made of a nice durable material and you can take all the covers off and throw them in the washing machine no problem at all.
The bed itself is 32” x 18” but the inside is obviously a bit smaller than that because of the outer pillow.
It’s also available in small and large sizes for those who need it. But overall it’s a great dog bed at a great price.
Orthopedic Dog Bed
Brand:Better World Pets
- 10% of Profits Go To Charity
- Non Skid Bottom
First off, I really like that 10% of the profits of this bed go to the Humane Society of the United States. It’s just a nice touch to feel like you’re doing some good when you make a purchase.
The memory foam inside is shredded which makes it feel softer than most single piece beds, if your pooch is the gentle type then this could be just what you’re looking for. It’s also completely waterproof which is great for the peace of mind.
All in all a great dog bed for medium dogs, with a comfortable filling and money going to charity. Lovely.
Best Dog Beds For Small Dogs
Now it’s time for small dogs! So dogs like: Yorkies, Daschund, Chihuahua, Boston Terrier, Pomeranian, Beagle, Corgi. A few of the other dog beds talked about above come in smaller sizes so it might be worth checking out them if you don’t like the look of the ones below.
Small Memory Foam Dog Bed
- Great For Sore Joints
- Washable Cover
- Range Of Sizes
This small memory foam dog bed is perfect for toy dogs. It’s hot a really comfy shredded memory foam base which is easy going on joints and a washable cover.
The problem is that cover isn’t waterproof so if there are any accidents they’ll soak through to the pillow itself. So no good for puppies but great for most other dogs. The shredded memory foam makes it softer than an equivalent solid piece making it a lot more comfortable.
Basically a great little bed!
Deep Dish Cuddler
Brand:Best Friends By Sheri
- Uber Cuddly
- Whole Thing is Washable
- Overstuffed For Added Padding
Another great small dog bed this time with cuddly sleepers in mind! The over stuffed sides gives a great nook for your pup to curl up in and it’s small enough that you put the whole thing in the washing machine to clean. No faffing with covers.
The problem is that the whole thing kinda has a tendency to tip over if the dogs get a bit excited while their on it. Fortunately, it’s pretty comfortable whatever way the bed is facing even if it’s being used sideways!
For the very cheap price I’d say it’s a solid dog bed for small dogs.
Best Elevated Dog Bed
Knitted Fabric Elevated Dog Bed
Cover Material:Breathable polyethylene
- Available as Small, Medium, Large
- Breathable Cover
The Coolaroo elevated dog bed is super handy. Lightweight enough that you can easily take it outside on nice days and it won’t get dirty because there’s nothing to it! It’s even durable enough to live outside if you need an outside dog bed.
It also doesn’t need washed you just vacuum it or wipe it clean. And because it’s elevated air flows underneath helping keep your pet cool.
Although your dog might be curious at first most will jump on and fall in love with their new bed. Great for outdoors, cooling easy cleaning and your Roomba can get underneath!
Best Cooling Dog Beds
Especially useful in hotter states a cooling dog bed could be just what you need if you hear your dog aggressively panting through the night. Definitely consider the elevated dog bed above if you’re wanting a cooling dog bed that’s built to last, it would have gone in this section but no point having it twice!
iComfort Sleeper Sofa
- Cooling Memory Foam
- Washable Cover
- Large and X-Large Sizes
It’s not often that cooling and memory foam can go hand in hand but Serta have managed. This gel memory foam bed encourages heat dissipation under your dog and has air vents throughout allowing the hot air to escape and keep your dog cool.
Unfortunately it’s only available in large and extra large so if you’re looking for a smaller cooling dog bed then go for the Cooleroo above.
Cooling Dog Pad
- Small, Medium and Large Available
- No Water or Refrigeration Required
- Indoor and Outdoor Use
I like the K&H cooling pad because you don’t need to mess around with any water or put the thing in the refrigerator to get it cool. It’s just a gel filling that when weight touches it gets cooler. So as long as you keep it in the shade it’ll cool them no problem.
It’s definitely not sturdy enough for your dog to sleep the night on but that’s not really what dog cooling pads are for. They’re for helping your favorite pupper cool down on a hot day which is exactly what this manages!
So if you need a cooling dog pad look no further.
Which Are The Best Crate Dog Beds?
All the recommendations here (except the raised bed) Will work just fine inside a crate. Just take a look at the dimensions given and make sure it’ll fit inside your dog crate.Generally, polyester filled ones are better but memory foam works fine too.
How Do I Know It’s The Right Size Of Bed?
To measure your dog for the right size of bed you want to measure from their nose to the base of their tail and add 6 inches. Then for the beds with a recommended weight pick up your dog then stand on the scales and subtract your weight from the total. Or go to the vet for a much more practical measurement…
